For the past couple years I have been having weird mood swings, is it a depression?

For the past couple years I have been having weird mood swings. Sometimes I act normal and act like myself but other times it just hits me and I become very sad and feel like doing nothing. I thought that it was gone but it keeps on coming back. I'm preety sure im not bipolar because I'm never really hyper but I'm just not sure what's wrong with me.
