What is the correct post-surgeys dosage of pain medication for an opiate tolerant...
...patient? I have been on Suboxone for 2 years after spending 6 years on narcotic pain medications for a chronic pain condition. I had a really bad experience about 3 months ago when I had to have emergency surgery. My surgeon was not familiar with Suboxone and did not realize that I was opiate tolerant until 5 horriblly painful days after the surgery. I kept asking the hospital nurses to explain to him that the pain medication they were giving me was not strong enough because I was on Suboxne and the nurses kept telling me that he was aware of all of my medications. Then after I was discharged from the hospital and in HORRIBLE pain still, I called and spoke to him myself and his response was that he had no idea what the medication was for and did not know that I was opiate tolerant. He then did not know what dosage of medication was appropriate for me and I ended up suffering even longer and eventually got better despite all the suffering.
Now I will be having surgery again tomorrow...cont..
So this time I would like to work out my post surgery pain management with the doctor ahead of time....though whenever I have taken this route in the past I am just treated like I am drug seeking and they tell me that they are sure the medication will be just fine---which is exactly what they told me before the last surgery.
Is anyone out there a doctor familiar with working with opiate tolerant people or has anyone who is opiate tolerant had surgery?
What is the appropriate dosage and type of post surgical pain medication for someone in my situation. I only took 1 mg of Suboxone today to (hopefully) lessen the medication blocking out the pain medication--but I also did that last time and it did not seem to do much at all.
Any info you can share about personal experience or advice on how best to explain this to the surgeon would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
