apnea is not breathing, sleep apnea is stopping breathing during sleep. sometimes its only a short time, and others are for long periods. yes, people can die from sleep apnea, they make a c-pap machine, like an oxygen mask for this if it is a chronic condition.

Heart failure due to obstructive sleep apnea can be fatal. Reggie White had pulmonary sarcoidosis which is fibrotic restrictive lung disease in addition to other problems.
