Traffic passes over the Colorado River near downtown Austin, Texas, Wednesday afternoon, May 22, 2002. It is the busiest six-lane section of highway in the state. From 1990 to 2000, the average daily traffic count at that point increased by some 40,000 vehicles to about 201,000 vehicles. Census 2000 figures from 41 states show commuting times increased in some of the nation's biggest and fastest-growing cities and suburbs. In many of those metropolitan areas, an increasing share of workers traded inthe car pool to make the trip solo.(AP Photo/Harry Cabluck)Traffic pollution can prevent the lungs of children who live near busy roads from developing properly, making them more likely to suffer respiratory and heart problems later in life, U.S. researchers said on Friday.
