An acoustic neuroma is a noncancerous (benign) tumor of the acoustic nerve, which carries sound from the inner ear to the brain. The exact cause usually isn't known. But acoustic neuromas are often associated with neurofibromatosis 2, an inherited disorder characterized by tumors of the cranial and spinal nerves. Acoustic neuromas are one of the most common types of brain tumors.

  • Acoustic neuroma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An acoustic neuroma , also called a vestibular schwannoma , is a benign primary intracranial tumor of the myelin -forming cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII). ( Neuroma is derived from Greek, meaning "nerve tumor".) The term "acoustic" is a misnomer , as the tumor rarely arises from the acoustic (or cochlear) division of the vestibulocochlear nerve.
