Zafirlukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) for the maintenance treatment of asthma. Available as a tablet, it blocks the action of leukotriene C4 on its receptors, thus reducing constriction of the airways, build-up of mucus in the lungs and inflammation of the breathing passages.

Asthma (AZ-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways, which are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things to which you are allergic or find irritating.
