Mode of ostensible diagnosis whose theory posits Qi (pronounced "chee"). Supposedly, Qi--often called "energy," "life-force," and "vitality"--is that which defines life. Chinese-medicine theory assigns areas of the tongue to internal organs, and various lingual conditions to visceral conditions. For example, lateral tooth marks allegedly signify a "Spleen Qi deficiency."

Practices used instead of standard treatments. They generally are not recognized by the medical community as standard or conventional medical approaches. Alternative medicine includes dietary supplements, megadose vitamins, herbal preparations, special teas, acupuncture, massage therapy, magnet therapy, spiritual healing, and meditation.
