Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands found atop of the kidneys in the human body. DHEA is also produced in the gonads, adiopose tissue and the brain. DHEA is structurally similar to, and is a precursor of, testosterone and estrogen. In blood, most DHEA is found as its derivative dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, DHEA-S.

SLE. A chronic inflammatory connective tissue disease marked by skin rashes, joint pain and swelling, inflammation of the kidneys, inflammation of the fibrous tissue surrounding the heart (i.e., the pericardium), as well as other problems. Not all affected individuals display all of these problems. Also called lupus.
