UroToday.com - An occupational exposure to hair dyes by hairdressers and barbers is shown to increase their bladder cancer risk. Hair dyes contain small amounts of aromatic amines, which are shown to be carcinogenic in animals. Prior to 1980, the formulations contained much higher contents of carcinogens.
Characteristics Of Long-term Lung Cancer Survivors

In preliminary findings from an ongoing study, researchers at Mayo Clinic have identified four different factors they say predicts long-term survival in patients diagnosed with lung cancer, and one of the strongest is inheritance of a gene variant, GSTM1 positive, which is more efficient than another allele type of the GSTM1 gene at detoxifying carcinogens.

While nicotine by itself is not carcinogenic, researchers now show that nicotine promotes cell proliferation and the progression of tumors already initiated by tobacco carcinogens. University of South Florida researchers show that the presence of receptors that bind nicotine, known as nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), on bronchial cells as well as lung cancer cells, are key to nicotine-induced cell proliferation of lung cancer cells. The study appears online in the JCI on July 20.
