Pre-eclampsia is said to be present when hypertension arises in pregnancy (pregnancy-induced hypertension) in association with significant protein in the urine. It should not, however, be considered primarily as a blood pressure disorder: such a simplistic view detracts from the fundamental pathological process underlying this condition.
