Dysgraphia is a difficulty writing coherently, if at all, regardless of ability to read. People with dysgraphia often can write, but lack co-ordination, and find other fine motor tasks like tying shoes difficult. They can also lack basic spelling skills, and often will say the wrong word when trying to formulate thoughts.

Learning disorders are thought to be caused by neurological abnormalities that trigger impairments in the regions of the brain that control visual and language processing and attention and planning. These traits may be genetically linked. Children from families with a history of learning disorders are more likely to develop disorders themselves.

To understand the cause of dysgraphia one must recognize the principle of human learning. There are certain skills that have to be learned and mastered before it is possible to master subsequent skills. This concept applies to writing. A person must learn the skill of handwriting before they can clearly express thoughts on paper.
