Sulfinpyrazone is not a cure for gout, and it is not used to treat an attack of gout once it has started. Sulfinpyrazone can prevent future gouty attacks as long as you continue to take it. Certain illnesses or medications can cause an increase in uric acid. Sulfinpyrazone can help to reduce the risk of complications (such as kidney stones) that can occur if uric acid levels in the blood are too high (hyperuricemia).
